A man has been jailed for nine years for attacking a shopkeeper with a hammer during a robbery in Nottingham.
A customer walked in and interrupted Kosav Mohammadi, 26, as he rained down blows of a hammer on shopkeeper Susila Kanagasingham, 38, at Best One in Lenton, Nottingham.
The shopper left the store and dialled 999 to get police help before going back inside the store where he saw Mohammadi standing over her.
Susila was trying to protect herself, was covered in blood and was begging for help, Nottingham Crown Court was told yesterday.
The witness said that police were on the way and Mohammadi threw his hammer across the store.
Susila managed to get up from the floor and drag herself outside along with the customer.
They then held the door shut to try and keep Mohammadi inside but retreated and hid behind a car when he smashed the window with a hammer.
The attacker then fled the scene, throwing the tool at Susila but missing her.
Police arrived seconds later and, helped by witnesses, chased after Mohammadi. Susila needed treatment for cuts to her throat, neck, knee and arm.
Following the attack she said: ‘I was completely scared because there was no one in the shop, just me.
‘During the incident, I was thinking about my kids. I said “I want to see my kids, my kids are waiting for me”. Then I heard someone, a tall man, banging on the window.
‘God sent someone to save me. He must have seen what was going on – and called the police. I don’t know who he is and I don’t know if I have seen him before, but I want to thank him.’
Mohammadi admitted to all four charges he faced over the attack on the woman, which occurred on May 1.
He was charged with wounding with intent, assault with intent to rob, having an offensive weapon, and being in possession of an article with a blade or point.
Detective Constable Steven Fenyn said: ‘I’d like to commend the victim for her immense bravery and the member of the public for his assistance and helping us to swiftly identify and detain this dangerous offender.
‘Mohammadi’s violent attack left the victim with nasty injuries which required hospital treatment.
‘I hope that now he’s been locked up for a significant amount of time and is now off our streets it brings her some comfort.’
