Thomas Campbell (30), of Mountsandel Road in Coleraine, admitted causing criminal damage to the machine.

He also pleaded guilty to being disorderly in Coleraine town centre and at the town’s Causeway Hospital.

On the same date – April 17 this year – he assaulted a police officer.

A prosecutor said police were called to the Tesco store at Bannfield Road in Coleraine in connection with an aggressive male and found him bare-chested at a nearby bar.

He was “highly aggressive” and made off.

When caught him he told officers he had “taken heroin” and an ambulance was tasked.

He was shouting and used abusive language towards officers.

Whilst travelling to hospital police officers and ambulance staff saw him “biting through an oxygen saturation cable rendering it dysfunctional”.

At the hospital Campbell continued to shout and be verbally abusive to police in full view of hospital staff and members of the public and he punched a police officer in a treatment cubicle.
District Judge Peter King deferred sentencing until next February.
