Man stabbed to death near 30th birthday party named by police

A man who was stabbed before collapsing and dying outside a 30th birthday party has been named by police as Julio Gomes.

Julio, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene next to Jubilee Park in Houndsfield Road, Edmonton, north London, at just after 8pm on Saturday night.

He was just yards away from where children were playing on inflatables set up outside the Old Edmontonians FC clubhouse for the party.

Birthday party guests chased and held down a suspected attacker, who was later arrested by police.

The Met said the suspect, a 40-year-old man, was in hospital having been arrested.

Detectives say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with their investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Considine said: ‘We continue to appeal for information following Julio’s death and need anyone who was present at the Old Edmontonians FC clubhouse that evening to come forward.

‘A crime scene remains in place and specialist forensics team are working on this case.

‘The incident is not thought to be connected to the event or the football club but we know lots of people were out and about that evening.

‘Anyone with information, no matter how insignificant they think it is, should contact police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible.’

A bartender, 60, who was working at the party on the day of the attack said: ‘I was working the bar and the first thing I heard was when some guests came inside and said somebody had been stabbed.

‘It started with a lone person just came running through the pitch and collapsed on the field.

‘Then the other person came after him and the guests jumped on top of him. They went right up to him and sat on him until police arrived.

‘The lady who was running the bouncy castle took her jacket off to stop the bleeding. She was a mess after, she was bawling her eyes out.

‘The guests were all doing CPR on the man to keep him alive.’
