British skydiver killed in Grand Canyon tandem jump with instructor – The Times

A British skydiver plunged to his death during a jump near the Grand Canyon on the morning before his 56th birthday.

Christopher Swales, from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, who had been on holiday in the US, booked a tandem jump with an instructor in the spectacular surroundings of the national park near the canyon in Arizona.

The pair are thought to have got into difficulty in the final stages of the descent, gone into freefall and hit the ground in a hard landing. Mr Swales, a married father who ran a joinery company, was found unconscious at the scene and taken to hospital but doctors could not save him. The instructor survived the fall with a broken leg.
