A man was arrested after he was caught allegedly assaulting a young woman during a robbery in the streets of Lyttelton on Tuesday morning.
Community members along with Monitor Net security officers intervened and accosted the suspect.
Lyttelton, Centurion police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said the suspect was detained by the Lyttelton SAPS and the matter was being investigated.
“We would like to thank all the parties that were involved in making sure that the suspect was arrested,” he said.
Miller, on behalf of the Lyttelton police station, offered the following safety tips with regards to street robberies that have been occurring in and around the area.
– Keep all valuables out of sight.
– If you are using a cellphone, make sure it’s secure and that nobody is following you.
– If you are listening to music while walking or waiting for transport, utilise one earphone. If you put both earphones in your ears, you are not able to hear and see what’s happening in and around you.
“We would like to make you aware that some of the suspects are using motor vehicles to stop next to the victims, they get out, attack the victims and jump back into the vehicle then drive away.
“Should you be involved in any incident like this, as far as possible to get as much information about culprits as you can. We do understand that it a very stressful situation, however, this will assist us in ensuring that these suspects are arrested,” Miller said.
