Wichita police investigate stolen car, chase
Update 3:15 p.m.
The Wichita Police Department has the third and final suspect in custody in connection with Tuesday’s chase and shooting.
The police did not say where he was found but they could be seen searching the 29th and Halstead areas after the pursuit of a stolen Jeep ended in a wreck.
Another one of the suspects hijacked a Honda CRV from an elderly couple. That man was stopped out in the county after he led the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office on a chase. Sheriff Jeff Easter said the chase ended in a “pond”-like area after the man left the road to avoid officers and got the car stuck.
The third suspect, a female, was arrested near 29th and Halstead where all three crashed a stolen Jeep and then fled.
Update 2:15 p.m.
The Sedgwick County sheriff said he authorized the use of deadly force in Tuesday’s chase because of the nature of the call and where the chase occurred.
Although, it never came to that.
Sheriff Jeff Easter said the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office tried to tactically stop the man driving a stolen Honda CRV but never got close enough. Easter said a deputy spotted the green car in the southern part of Wichita and the chase continued west into the county. The man drove into oncoming traffic and reached in excess of 100 mph during the chase that ended when the man drove the hijacked car off the road to elude officers and got the car stuck off of K-42 just south of 55th Street, Easter said.
The man suffered a broken arm, “maybe (from a) gunshot wound.” He was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis.
Easter said he wouldn’t authorize the use of deadly force had the pursuit been in a busier area or for misdemeanors.
Wichita police are still looking for one suspect after a chase that started at a McDonald’s drive-thru near 21st and Amidon streets.
Officer Paul Cruz said police went to stop a stolen Jeep in the drive-thru around 9:45 a.m. when the driver tried to ram police, causing officers to open fire. The driver then plowed into a Buick Century driven by a woman who had minor injuries.
Cruz said the suspects took off and wrecked the Jeep near 29th and Meridian. Police surrounded a white Jeep near 29th and Halstead streets.
A woman was arrested where the Jeep crashed, Cruz said.
Malia Southern, 15, said she heard the crash while doing homework and went outside to see the woman being taken into custody.
“She was limping,” Southern said.
The two men stole a Honda CRV from an elderly couple near where the Jeep crashed, Cruz said. One man was arrested after a chase that went south into the county and ended around 167th and K-42.
Cruz said the suspect had injuries but didn’t know the extent. Cruz didn’t know if he was injured by gunshot.
Deputies with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office arrested the suspect.
Police are looking for the third suspect. They were using a dog and drone around the area of 29th and Halstead streets.
The initial call was that a suspect fired at police. Cruz said he didn’t “believe that’s the case.” Cruz said a BB gun was tossed out of one of the stolen vehicles and has been recovered.
