An 82-year-old pensioner used her walking stick to ‘wallop’ a robber who came into her newsagent.

Shop owner June Turner was by the tills when the man came in dressed in a blanket and demanded cash at around 6.30am on September 3.

She refused to give into his demands, and instead hit him ‘hell for leather’.

CCTV captured the astonishing moment she struck and jabbed the man with the stick she uses to get around since breaking her hip three years ago.

The robber grabbed £50 and six packs of cigarettes and pushed June to the ground, giving her a black eye.

He then ran away from AJ and J Newsagents in Hanley’s Lichfield Road, Stoke-on-Trent.

A metal bar was later recovered – while June was back behind the till serving customers within half an hour.

Grandmother-of-three June, who has worked in the shop for 45 years, said: ‘He came in with this blanket around him and I could only see his eyes. He
came up to the counter and said ‘I want your money’ but I said “You’re not having my money” and with that he came round the back of the counter and got some money from the till.

‘I saw him with a £20 note in his hand and then I couldn’t find the panic button so I got my stick and I really belted him with it but I thought to myself I wish I had my wooden stick because then I would have knocked him out. I went hell for leather on him.

‘Then he opened the fags and they were all on the floor. He pushed me to the floor and I was worried in case of breaking my hip as I had a replacement a few years ago and I didn’t want to go through that again.

‘And then he rushed out like the clappers.’

June remained on the floor until a regular customer called Craig came in and helped her.

She said: ‘I shouted to Craig who comes in every morning that I was down here on the floor and then he rang the police and paramedics and then my son Alan came back from delivering his papers.

‘It was just my instinct to try to stop him and give him a good whack. I think he was quite shocked, he wasn’t expecting that. I bet he thought “She’s getting on a bit”.

‘You can’t give way to them, but you do have to be careful in case they’ve got knives. I didn’t give him a chance to get a knife out because I was already hitting him. If it happened again I’d react the same but with something heavier.

June’s son Alan admits he is now worried about leaving his mum alone in the shop after she insisted she would be back to work the next day.

Alan, from Werrington, said: ‘She was very brave and I don’t think he’ll be back. I just hope nothing like this happens again and I’m happy my mum is OK.’

Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The suspect was white, aged between 25 and 30, with a slight blond moustache and wearing a black tracksuit.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: ‘Police are investigating a robbery in Hanley where a woman in her 80s was pushed to the floor and are appealing for information.’

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: ‘We were called by police at 6.30am to Lichfield Street, Hanley. One ambulance attended and we
assessed one woman who didn’t require any hospital treatment.’
