Police have arrested two suspects in connection with a double shooting of police officers in Tampere in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The National Bureau of Investigation says the arrests happened at 20:36 on Sunday evening after a car chase, as officers pursued two people for half an hour on the road from Tampere towards Ylöjärvi.

Police say the suspects shot at officers from their car as they were trying to get away.

Interior Minister Maria Ohisalo (Green) thanked officers on Twitter for their actions.

“Thank you for your good work in catching the suspects! Numerous people have done important work throughout the day, thank you all” the minister wrote.

A picture on social media purported to be the suspects, shows two people dressed in black kneeling at the side of the road with their hands in the air, next to a silver vehicle. The picture has not been verified by law enforcement officials.

The officers were shot around 00:30 on Sunday morning as they responded to a routine call in the southern town of Porvoo. While they were both taken to hospital, one was released but the other was in a more serious – although not life threatening – condition.

A huge manhunt overnight yielded no results but police kept up their efforts during the day on Sunday, warning the public that the suspects were “armed and dangerous.”
