Kitesurfer dies after ‘being blown into wall’ at Camber Sands beach – Mirror Online

A kitesurfer has died at Camber Sands beach after he crashed into concrete and was dragged across rocks this morning.

Police have confirmed a man setting up a kite had died at the East Sussex beach after falling on to a wall at a beach this morning.

Sussex Police are calling the man’s death a “tragic accident.”

Horrified onlookers described seeing the man setting up his kite while still on the beach, before he was swept away in the wind and landed on to a hard concrete rock wall, where he was dragged across the rocks.

It was thought the man, who had come prepared with his own equipment, was getting ready to enter the water on a day where the popular kite surfing spot had excellent conditions.

Sussex Police were called to Camber Sands near Rye this morning and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, the force said.

An inspector at the force said the man was setting up a kite believed to be for either a kitesurf or a paraglider.

Police said the man was not local and it is unclear what his age was.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “Emergency services went to the beach at Camber Sands near Rye just after 10.10am this morning 20 July after a report that a man had sustained serious injuries by falling on to a wall.

“Sadly he was confirmed dead at the scene. His death is being treated as a tragic accident at this time and enquiries are being made to trace next of kin.

“He is not from the local area.”

The victim may have been a kite surfer who was getting ready to set off on the activity for the morning, an employee of the nearby The Kitesurf Centre said.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said: “It looks like an incident while they were setting up their kite. They weren’t on the water.”

He said weather conditions were good on Saturday, adding that it was “not massively windy”.

The victim may have been a kite surfer who was getting ready to set off on the activity for the morning, an employee of the nearby The Kitesurf Centre said.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said: “It looks like an incident while they were setting up their kite. They weren’t on the water.”

A spokesman for the centre, which rents out equipment and provides lessons for kitesurfers, added that the incident had nothing to do with their rental store, as the man who died  had not rented any equipment but had brought their own.

The spokesman added: “The wind was actually very regular, around 20 knots, there were no adverse conditions at all, it was quite good kite surfing conditions.

“This was a land-based accident, before the man entered the water, while they were setting up their kite.”

Police confirmed the man’s next-of-kin had been informed.
