A man has been found guilty of murder after stabbing his wife more than 50 times in a row over gambling.

Jalal Uddin, 47, brutally attacked his 31-year-old wife Asma Begun in their east London home on January 11 after she confronted him about £200 he spent gambling.

Police said Uddin had drawn the money from his wife’s bank account a day earlier, before losing it all within an hour.

The funds were meant to provide food for their three children, the police added.

Ms Begun was later found by family members in the kitchen of their home in Tower Hamlets with stab and slash wounds across her head, neck and body.

Police were called to the scene just after 4pm, where the mother-of-three was shortly pronounced dead.

Her husband handed himself in at Croydon Police Station at 1am the next morning, telling officers “My wife hurt me”.

Uddin was found guilty of murder at the Old Bailey on Wednesday and is set to be sentenced at the same court tomorrow, police said.

After the jury’s verdict, Ms Begun’s family said: “Asma was more than just a mother, wife, sister and aunt.

“She was an amazing mother who put her children first at all costs.

“Anyone who met her could always find a friend in her. She was loving, caring and always filled any room with laughter.

“This is a huge loss to our family, three children have lost their mother. We have lost a sister, an aunt and friend. The hole that has been left in our lives can never be filled.”

Detective Inspector Brett Hagen of the Specialist Crime Command who led the investigation said Uddin had a gambling addiction and “continually wasted what little money they had on betting.”

“I hope the guilty conviction passed today can be of some small comfort to Asma’s grieving family,” he said.

Uddin and Ms Begun had been married in Bangladesh in August 2007.
