Wild Stolen Car Chase Through San Jose Mineta Airport’s Departure Lane – CBS San Francisco
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) — Two people were in custody and a third remained at large early Thursday after a wild chase that included a high-speed pursuit through the departure lane at Mineta San Jose International Airport, authorities said.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department said the pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle began around midnight on Tully Road near Senter Road. The driver failed to respond to the ensuing officers and the chase went onto Highway 87 with California Highway Patrol going the pursuit.
Authorities said speed topped 100 mph on the freeway and then in a wild attempt to elude the officers, the driver took the off-ramp to Mineta San Jose Airport and sped through the Terminal A departure lane at speeds of 50-60 mph.
As surprised pedestrians looked on, the car soared over a speed bump and bottomed out in a cascade of sparks. There were no injuries to anyone at the airport which was in the overnight lull in flights.
The chase continued and ended when the vehicle crashed near De Rose Way and Southwest Expressway.
“The three occupants in the vehicle fled on foot and began jumping fences through a residential neighborhood, which resulted in deploying a K9,” the sheriff’s department said in a press release.
Two of the three suspects were arrested shortly after and one suspect is still at large.
The male suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Anthony Zavala, who was booked into the Main Jail on several charges including felony evading, stolen vehicle, resisting/delaying arrest and possession of stolen property.
He was also on probation for burglary, auto theft, petty theft, possession and sales of a controlled substance.
A 14-year old female suspect was cited for fleeing the scene and released to her custodial guardian.
Deputies set up a perimeter and searched the area, but were unable to locate the third suspect, who was described as a Hispanic male with an Afro hairstyle, thin build, wearing dark clothing.
Authorities said that during the incident a bystander was injured and transported to a local area hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.
A search of the stolen vehicle uncovered an air soft pistol, a shaved key and a large quantity of stolen driver’s licenses, passports, identification cards and credit cards.
