Wan Chau Ming, 53, from Portadown, Northern Ireland, drowned at a beach in the Brit holiday hotspot of Phuket earlier this week.

A double tragedy was narrowly avoided thanks to the quick actions of another beachgoer who threw himself into the water to save the man’s son.

Witnesses said 24-year-old Wan Chun Tat and his dad pulled up at Surin Beach on a motorbike before heading into the sea for a swim.

The waves were reportedly very high and strong whipped up by onshore winds battering the island.

Amnat Chuasman, 26, who rescued the son said the two were swept out to sea by a big wav.

He said he scrambled to swim out to rescue them but managed to save only the younger tourist.

He called for an ambulance to take the rescued tourist to the hospital and he resumed the search for the father.

But the Brit, who lives in Hong Kong, had already drowned.

Hero Amnat brought the dad’s body back to the beach to await emergency services to arrive.

Wan Chun Tat was rushed to the Thalang Hospital where his condition is not known.

Wan Chau Ming’s body was later sent to the Thalang Hospital for autopsy.

The Phuket tourist police have informed the British embassy of the incident.

Choeng Thalay police said they were alerted at 3pm that a foreign tourist had drowned and another was injured.

There are currently no lifeguards posted on Surin Beach, one of the island’s most popular swimming beaches.
