SAN JOSE — A fatal traffic accident in the South Bay closed several lanes of Interstate 880 in the southbound direction after emergency crews arrived at the scene, officers said Friday night.

The fatality happened on southbound Interstate 880 near the on-ramp from westbound Dixon Landing Road in Santa Clara County a short distance from the Fremont border, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.

The accident was reported at approximately 5:48 p.m. Friday by the San Jose office of the California Highway Patrol.

“Our officer rolled up responding to a traffic collision,” said an official with the CHP’s transportation management center in the Bay Area.

The CHP report stated that an individual was trapped inside a vehicle.

“The officer determined it was a traffic fatality,” the CHP said.

An attempt was made by emergency crews to resuscitate the victim, the CHP accident log stated. The victim wasn’t identified.

The three left-hand lanes of Interstate 880 were closed due to the fatality. Lanes four through six were open, the CHP reported.

By 9 p.m., the CHP had ended a Sig Alert for the accident, saying all the lanes of Highway 880 were reopened.

The Highway Patrol was investigating the cause of the accident, but it remained undetermined Friday evening.
