What’s the first rule of stealing a bike? Probably not to draw attention to yourself by not wearing a helmet.

Delta police have arrested a man after he was caught riding a stolen bike without a helmet in the same neighbourhood where the bike was reported missing. Officers are now seeking the owner of a second bike the suspect is also believed to have stolen.

On June 5, a student at North Delta Secondary reported to the school liaison officer that his locked bike had been stolen a day earlier from school property. The officer ensured information about a potential suspect was circulated in the department.

The following day, a patrol support team spotted a man near the high school riding a bike without a helmet, while carrying a second bike.

Police stopped the man and was in the process of issuing him a fine when they identified the individual as being the potential suspect. Upon inspecting the bike he was riding, they found that it was the bike that had been reported missing by the NDSS student.

The owner of the second bike has not yet been identified.

Terry Lee Pipe, a 43-year-old Surrey man, was arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by crime, and three counts of failing to comply with court-ordered conditions. Pipe is known to police.

Officers are now hoping the owner of the second bike will come forward. Anyone who recognizes the bike is asked to contact Delta police at 604-946-4411 and cite file 19-11965.
