COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (WOWT) – A shooting in Council Bluffs left one man dead Monday evening.
The gunfire came as three cars were involved in a high-speed chase that ended as one vehicle crashed into a tree at 9th Ave. and South Main St.
Police said the chase involved a stolen car and multiple shots fired.
“Anyone could have been shot because of someone’s stupidity. I don’t know what it’s coming to anymore,” a witness told our sister station WOWT 6 News.
Officers said the whole ordeal began Monday morning in Omaha when a black Nissan was stolen. The pursuit began around 5 p.m. when friends of the car’s owner saw it on the road.
“It was like a demolition derby going on between the blue car and the black Nissan and all of a sudden somebody started shooting,” a witness said.
Officers confirmed it was the person in the black Nissan that was shot and transported to a hospital where he later died.
“I saw the ambulance came and took him away. It seemed like he was dead,” the witness said.
The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police arrived at the scene around 5:20 p.m. and said all of the parties were cooperative. A press release said the shots were fired before the crash.
Both witnesses that spoke with WOWT 6 News said that the situation is highly unusual for that part of Council Bluffs.
“Way unusual! This is the Hay Market, got the new BBQ place opening up. This is a very popular place ’cause it could be really nice, you know. And it’s so sad… it’s terrible,” one said.
“My kids go to school right here in town and it’s pretty scary, especially with Bayliss Park right here and all the kids that hang out in this area,” the other said.
Police were expected to release more details Tuesday morning.
Anyone with information or who was in the area should call Crime Stoppers at 712-328-7867.
