A pair of police officers accidentally shot one another while chasing down a suspect.
Officers were called to reports of a burglary in a trailer park at around 11pm on Saturday night in Elk Grove, Sacramento, US.
One cop followed the suspect, who the 911 caller said had moved a gun from his trouser to his sweatshirt pocket.
As the first officer followed him into the parking lot of pharmacy Walgreens a second officer arrived at the scene, according to a statement from Elk Grove Police Department.
While the two officers were closing in on the suspect from either side he reportedly moved his hand towards his waistband.
The move led the police to start firing, hitting one another as well as the suspect.
All three men were taken to hospital, with the officers suffering non-life threatening wounds to the lower leg.
“I said get out of the window because there’s going to be bullets spraying here in a little bit,” witness to the incident Dean Trafton told Sacramento CBS Local.
“We’ve seen the cops when we looked out the window and they all had their guns drawn towards the trailer and you know anytime guns are drawn there’s a possibility of there being a shooting.
While the police officers have since been released from hospital the suspect – a 41-year-old man from Sacramento – is still being treated for his injuries.
When he is well enough to leave the hospital he will be booked for offences including committing a felon while in possession of a firearm and resisting arrest.
The incident remains under investigation.
