Shocking footage shows the moment an Eddie Stobart HGV driver makes a frantic last-gasp manoeuvre as he almost misses his exit.

Babs Willis caught the incident on her dash cam on April 5 at the Darenth Interchange, junction 2 in Dartford, Kent.

Road safety experts have described the reckless move as ‘frightening’.

Despite passing route information and lane direction signs just 18 seconds earlier, the driver swerved at the last moment causing the driver behind him to take evasive action.

The driver illegally drove across chevrons to save himself a detour of around 7 miles – which would typically take 24 minutes.

Highway Code rule 130 states: ‘If the area is marked with chevrons and bordered by solid white lines you MUST NOT enter it except in an emergency.’

Babs 45, shared the footage on social media and got a mixed response.

Richard Kavanagh said: ‘Most Truckers are just as bad as one another, in fact their road sense is no better or worse than other drivers.

‘But worst of all they are not driving a little car, but a bloody great lorry badly.’

Fiona Cerys Reece-Gronow wrote: ‘Oh dear, Eddie Stobart Drivers are ‘supposed’ to be elite professionals too!’

Stuart Forbes Evans commented: ‘Everyone makes mistakes, no one’s perfect, he would have looked left and saw no one there.’

Daniel Letherhead replied: ‘Making the mistake of missing your junction doesn’t give you the right to break the law.’

Speaking today Babs from Feltham said: ‘I work as a professional driver I see all kinds of stuff on the roads.

‘It certainly wasn’t pretty, I don’t understand why some people think it was a non-event – it was extremely dangerous.’

RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: ‘This is a very frightening piece of dashcam footage.

‘Those who witnessed it must have been terrified.

‘It’s amazing no harm came from such a last-second, dangerous manoeuvre.’

After viewing the footage a spokesman for Eddie Stobart Logistics declined to comment.
