CHICOPEE – A 24-year-old Chicopee woman has died from injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident in Chicopee on Friday night. A Chicopee man has been charged.
Chicopee Police posted a Facebook update Saturday morning naming David Delgado, 48, of Chicopee as the alleged driver in the vehicle which has left one woman dead and a 23-year-old Chicopee man hospitalized with serious injuries.
Police said both were struck by the motor vehicle in the area of 460 Chicopee St. around 10:29 p.m. The car appeared to have driven up onto the sidewalk where the pedestrians were walking.
“It was also learned that the driver of the offending vehicle left the scene on foot. Detective Michael Dion, and K9 Officer Sean Livingstone located the operator and detained him. The operator was being stopped by Good Samaritans who had followed him from the scene,” said Michael Wilk, public information officer for the Chicopee Police Department.
Wilk said officers detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from Delgado’s mouth, slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. When he was stopped while walking away he was not wearing any shoes or socks. He attempted, several times, to walk away from officers, so he was placed in the back of a patrol car.
Chicopee Fire EMT’s and ambulance personnel tended to the victims, and both were transported to the hospital. The victims names are not being released at this time.
Delgado has been charged with operating under the influence of liquor, leaving the scene of a personal injury and fatal crash, motor vehicle homicide and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. He is currently being held on $20,000 bail.
