DERBY — Due to a serious motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian, the westbound lanes of Derby Avenue are closed at the intersection of Sodom Lane, police said Monday afternoon.
Derby Avenue is also known as Route 34. It connects New Haven and West Haven with Orange and Derby and also connects drivers with routes 8 and 15.
Due to the accident this afternoon, traffic is being rerouted down Baldwin Road for the time being, Orange police said in a Facebook post.
“The investigation has just begun and the westbound lanes of Derby Avenue will be closed for several hours,” police said just before 3:45 p.m.
A few hours prior to the crash, police had issued an alert that road work was expected to begin at the intersection of Derby Avenue and Baldwin Road. That construction, which is meant to improve the safety of the intersection, is expected to be completed in October.
“The project will involve adding and expanding the turn lanes onto Baldwin Road from Derby Avenue and the installation of a traffic control signal,” police said. “Construction will be scheduled to minimize the impact on Derby Avenue traffic during peak travel times, which will necessitate some overnight work.”
Police reminded drivers to be cognizant of the workers’ presence and to drive safely.
