Police officers swooped on Leicester Square this morning to arrest a man on suspicion of possessing a firearm after officers had been flagged down by terrified members of the public.
Witnesses described the man waiving the gun around in the heart of Leicester Square at around 8.40am this morning.
Armed police managed to disarm the man after pinning him to the ground within seconds.
The Metropolitan Police said the incident was not ‘being treated as terror-related’.
The gun, police said, was an imitation firearm.
A Met police spokesperson said: ‘Police in Leicester Square were flagged down by a member of public at about 08:40hrs on Tuesday, 19 February to reports of a man believed to be in possession of a firearm.
‘The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.
‘He has been taken to a central London police station where he remains in custody.
‘No injuries were reported.
