Jailed MP Fiona Onasanya should lose £77,000 salary, says former Commons watchdog

Calls were made today for Parliament to block the salary of an MP jailed for lying about a speeding ticket.

Fiona Onasanya, the former Labour MP for Peterborough who is now an independent, will continue to draw her £77,000 salary while in prison.

The ex-solicitor, 35, was sentenced to three months at the Old Bailey yesterday for perverting the course of justice after claiming she was not the person driving her speeding car in 2017.

Sir Alistair Graham, former chairman of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, said: “If you can’t do your job, you don’t get paid. This is not a case of sick leave.”

Labour MP Lucy Powell said the public would be “outraged”.

Onasanya is appealing against her conviction. A recall process, where constituents can trigger a by-election, cannot start until the appeal case is over.
