A driver has been arrested after crashing into five vehicles and flipping the car on its roof with his partner and baby inside.

The unnamed man, who was allegedly driving with false registration plates, was then seen jumping into the canal after the crash.

The mother and 18-month-old child were taken to hospital, where it was found they had sustained no serious injuries.

A red Vauxhall Corsa failed to stop for police in the town at about 2.10pm. It collided with a small number of vehicles during the incident, including a Mitsubishi L200 Warrior. That collision happened in Tamworth Road and resulted in the Corsa ending up on its roof. A man was detained at the scene and has been taken to hospital to be checked over. A woman and baby who were in the Corsa were also taken to hospital for checks. No one was reported as injured in the Mitsubishi. An investigation into the incident is ongoing and there will be disruption to traffic while that continues. Police said that the driver of the red Vauxhall Corsa remains in custody following the incident in Long Eaton, Derbyshire at around 2.10pm on Sunday.

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit tweeted: ‘Long Eaton yesterday. Corsa on false plates fails to stop. Lost in town centre. Then found flipped on it’s roof after hitting five cars.

‘Driver seen jumping into the canal leaving his partner and 18 month baby in the car. No serious injuries. Driver arrested and remains in custody.’
