BROOKSVILLE — A man died in “a very serious aircraft accident” that took place Thursday on the ground at Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.
The man “had an interaction” with the aircraft, said Sheriff Al Nienhuis, and “died almost immediately.”
The aircraft appears to be a 1993 Bell 230 twin-engine light helicopter, according to Federal Aviation Administration records.
The sheriff did not release the identity or occupation of the man who was killed. Nor did Nienhuis say how the fatal incident occurred, what kind of aircraft was involved or who owns it.
The sheriff would only say that it involved a civilian aircraft that was powered at the time while it was on the ground.
The incident was reported at about 3:35 p.m. near the hangars, Nienhuis said. The incident did not take place near the runways and other air traffic was not affected.
The sheriff said foul play is not suspected and that no one else was injured in the incident.
The Sheriff’s Office has reported the fatal incident to the Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
