Two people have died after a driver went the wrong way down a dual carriageway and crashed into a taxi.

A woman in her seventies was reportedly at the wheel when she hit a black cab at around 1.45am this morning.

The driver of the cab, a man in his forties, was pronounced dead at the scene along with the woman.

It happened near the ‘Witch’s Hat’ junction of the A-road at Dagenham, east London.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: ‘Police were called to the Witch’s Hat junction of the A13 in Dagenham at 1.45am on Monday, December 31, to reports of a car travelling the wrong way down the carriageway.

‘Shortly afterwards, the car was involved in a collision with a taxi heading in the opposite direction.’

Barking and Dagenham Police tweeted: ‘INCIDENT: A13 E/B (towards Essex) is CLOSED in Dagenham from the Goresbrook Interchange to the Marsh Way junction following a double fatal road traffic collision.

‘Long delays on approach. Please find alternative routes. The road is likely to be closed for the foreseeable.’
