Airman 1st Class Michael Mahony, who served with the 48th Maintenance Group, 48th Component Maintenance Squadron at Royal Air Force Lakenheath, was involved in a collision while driving in a roundabout in town, the release said.
“The Liberty Wing is deeply saddened by the loss of Michael,” Col. John Kent, his wing commander, said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
The RAF Lakenheath chapel will hold a memorial for Mahony on Friday at 10 a.m., the release said.
“The Green Dragons are heartbroken by the sudden and tragic loss of Airman Michael Mahony,” Lt. Col. Darrell Chase, Mahony’s squadron commander, said in the release. “Michael made an immediate and long lasting impact on the propulsion flight and all those he worked with. His greatest impact is the love, care and friendship he offered to all those he came into contact with. He will be missed.”
The Suffolk Constabulary is investigating the incident, the release said.
