LAKE PRESTON, S.D. (KSFY) – Authorities say one man has drowned and another has been rescued after falling through ice near Lake Preston.
According to the Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office, two men were ice fishing on Lake Whitewood around 9:30 a.m. when they fell through the ice.
Authorities were able to rescue one man around 10:30 a.m. and found the other man around 12 p.m. Their names are not being released at this time.
Lake Preston Fire and Ambulance, De Smet Fire and Ambulance, Game, Fish and Parks, Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office and the Codington County Dive and Rescue Team responded to the call.
The sheriff’s office is asking ice fishers to take extreme caution as temperatures have been warmer so far this season.
Experts say ice should be 4-to-6 inches thick to walk on, 6-to-12 inches to drive an ATV or snowmobile on and 12-to-16 inches to drive a pickup.
