Witnesses have described the moment they arrived at the scene of a fatal road collision that closed the A358 from the early hours of Sunday morning (November 11).
Three people sadly died, a man and woman in their 70s along with a man in his 20s, after a crash near Ashill.
The driver of one of the vehicles is also in a critical condition at Southmead Hospital in Bristol and Somerset Live has been contacted by motorists who arrived at the scene in the moments after the accident happened.
Witnesses reported that a helicopter circled overhead with a searchlight aiding the emergency services, who were quickly on the scene.
Steph Harris told us that she was about four cars back when the accident happened.
She said: “There was a car with black smoke coming from it. I couldn’t see exactly what was happening as there was a lot of smoke.
“Emergency services were very quick. Within five minutes of it happening, ipolice cars turned up and not long after a fire engine turned up.”
Another witness described the scene in a similar way and commented about the amount of smoke that was billowing from one of the cars.
Eliie Wakeman told us that she was at the scene within seconds of the crash happening.
She said: “There was a lot of smoke coming from one of the cars. I ran to help with as much warm clothing and blankets as possible.
“There were a few seriously injured and others I’m not totally sure about. It was a very saddening accident.”
Police are now appealing for witnesses who may have travelled on the road shortly before the incident.
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said: “We are appealing for witnesses and information following a fatal collision on the A358 near Ashill.
“The incident, at 12.12am on Sunday November 11, involved a yellow Vauxhall Tigra and a black Citroen C3.
“A man and woman in their 70s, travelling in the Citroen, sadly died at the scene, along with the passenger of the Tigra, a man in his 20s. The driver of the Tigra remains in a critical condition in Southmead Hospital. We have informed the immediate next of kin.
“The road was closed until shortly after 7am while specialist collision investigators examined the scene.”
