LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — An exercise rider has died after a training accident at Churchill Downs.
This is according to an article posted Saturday on the Daily Racing Form.
According to the Daily Racing Form, the accident happened early Saturday at the track.
The person who died has been identified as 42-year-old Odanis Acuna, who was an exercise rider for trainer Kenny McPeek.
McPeek posted the following tweet on Saturday:
The report states that Acuna was fatally injured when the horse he was breezing before dawn broke down in both front legs. As a result, Acuna suffered fatal head and neck injuries.
The report also states the horse involved in the accident was New York Harbor, an unstarted 2-year-old Verrazano colt, which had to be euthanized.
Following the accident, training at the track has been canceled for the rest of the morning.
