M5 motorway shut in both directions after pedestrian dies in accident on motorway

0 3

The M5 motorway is set to remain closed throughout much of the morning due to a fatal accident in the West Midlands near Birmingham early this morning (Saturday November 3 2018).

The carriageway is closed in both directions between Junction 4 (near Lydiate Ash) and Junction 3 (near Quinton) after a pedestrian on the motorway was struck by a vehicle and killed.

Highways England, West Mercia Police and the Central Motorway Police Group are at the scene – with Highways England saying shortly before 6am the road is expected to remain closed for several more hours.

The closure was first reported at around 2am this morning – with a nearby bridge also shut.

Diversions (listed below) are in place in both directions – with Frankley Services also inaccessible due to the closure.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: “Police dealing with the collision on the M5 this morning are appealing for any witnesses to get in contact.

“Between 1.45am and 2am a pedestrian on the carriageway was struck by on-coming traffic. The pedestrian, a man in his late 50s, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the incident.

“Police are appealing for any motorists travelling north or south on the M5 near to Frankley Services to get in contact.”

“The road remains closed while emergency services continue to deal with the incident. Any witnesses should contact West Mercia Police on 101 quoting reference 55s 031118.”

Inspector Russ Barker added: “The M5 is a central route for people travelling across the country and we’re keen to speak to anyone who was on the stretch of the motorway between junction 3 and 4 near to Frankley Services early this morning.”

Diversions on the M5 this morning (Saturday November 3)

Northbound:Road users approaching the closure are advised to exit the motorway at junction 4. Then join the A491 westbound towards Hagley. At Hagley, join the A456 eastbound, to then re-join the M5 at junction 3. Follow the solid black circle diversion symbol.

Southbound:Same route as the northbound, but in reverse. Follow the solid black diamond diversion symbol. Road users should expect delays and allow plenty of extra time for their journey.

A Highways England spokesman said: “The M5 is closed in both directions between junction 4 (near Lydiate Ash) and junction 3 (near Quinton), due to a collision.

“If you need to visit a motorway service area this morning, perhaps for fuel or refreshments, a reminder that Frankley services is within the section of the M5 that is closed.

“The M5 is expected to remain closed both ways this morning for several more hours.”
