Teen sustains life-threatening injuries in Castine accident

CASTINE, Maine (WABI) – Three students at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine were injured last night, one of them critically, after a crash last night.

Emergency responders were called to the Castine road around 8:30 in the evening.

Authorities say 18-year-old Thomas Spurling was heading south on the Castine Road when he hit a deer, went off the road and struck a tree.

Spurling was flown by Lifeflight to a Bangor hospital. He’s now listed in critical condition.

Stephen Sarkas, 21, of Rhode Island and 19-year-old Aodhan Dougherty of Massachusetts were passengers in the vehicle, both went by ambulance to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to the sheriff, all three were wearing their seat belt.

The accident is still being investigated.
