Live: A50 reopens in Staffordshire following accident which saw van leave road

The A50 has reopened after being shut for several hours after a van left the carriageway early this morning.

The accident took place on the Westbound carriageway between Uttoxeter and Blythe Bridge at around 4am.

The vehicle overturned during the accident- with police this morning saying the driver is in a stable condition after being rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Inrix, the traffic data company, reported the closure was from the A518 / B5030 (Little Chef Roundabout) to A521 (Blythe Bridge Roundabout / Draycott).

Highways England said local diversions were in place, with congestion reported back to Cubley in Derbyshire at one point.

A number of other routes around the area, including the A522, became congested – while the A52 is shut between Froghall and Whiston in th Staffordshire Moorlands after a tanker became stuck.

A Highways England spokesman said: “Investigations complete, The A50 is now open. Thanks for your patience. Delays remain in the area but will now start to clear.

The closure was first reported shortly before 7.30am today (Friday November 2) – with police reopening the carriageway at around 9.30am.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “Officers responded to a report of a road traffic collision on the A50 involving a Volkswagen van that has left the main carriageway about a mile and a half after the Blythe Bridge roundabout at around 4:15am this morning.

“The A50 westbound has now reopened following a collision earlier this morning. The collision involved a van leaving the main carriageway. One man has been taken to hospital and is in a stable condition. Hopefully traffic levels will return to normal soon.”

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called by police at 4.17am this morning to reports of an overturned van. One ambulance, one paramedic officer and Two BASICS Doctors attended.

“There was one male patient. He was treated for serious injuries and given specialist care at the scene and taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital in a serious condition.

“One of the doctors travelled in the ambulance to continue treatment en route to hospital. He was our only patient.”
