NOVATO (CBS SF) — A car fatally struck a man walking in a traffic lane on U.S. Highway 101 N near Ignacio Boulevard/Entrada Drive in Novato and caused major traffic delays Sunday night.
The man, who had not been identified by 8:30 p.m. Sunday night, was hit by a car headed north on the freeway shortly before 7 p.m. said CHP Officer Andrew Barclay. The driver of the car, who was not injured, stopped and is cooperating with CHP investigators, Barclay said.
All lanes were blocked after the Nave Drive exit, which is also to where traffic was being diverted. Traffic was completely backed up to Alameda Del Prado.
Initial reports that the victim had been thrown from a car proved incorrect, Barclay said. It wasn’t immediately apparent why the man was walking in the traffic lanes, he added.
At 8:30 p.m., all but the right-hand “slow” lane of northbound 101 were closed at the accident site, creating a significant traffic backup. A smaller backup was also an issue in the southbound lanes of 101.
At around 9:40 p.m., all lanes were reopened. The incident lasted 2 hours and 31 minutes, officials said.
