Handcuffed burglary suspect escapes Friendswood police on the way to jail

A Webster man arrested by Friendswood police escaped on the way to the county jail early Sunday, fleeing into the bayou and eluding capture even while handcuffed.

Khaled Abdelrahman Azzeh was taken into custody a day earlier, when he ran from police and was charged with evading arrest. He’s also the suspect in a number of burglaries, authorities said, and was still at large by mid-day Sunday.

A resident in the 3500 block of Arezzo Circle initially called police about a suspicious person opening vehicle doors and peering into windows, according to Friendswood police.

When officers showed up to investigate, Azzeh – who was already out on $15,000 bond for felony vehicle theft – allegedly tried to run away. But police took him into custody and booked him into the Friendswood City Jail.

Then Sunday around 3:15 a.m., an officer drove him to the county jail. As she took him to the inmate processing area, he allegedly pushed her down and ran away into Buffalo Bayou, still wearing handcuffs and a black-and-white jail shirt.

A Harris County jailer chased after him on foot, and the Houston Police Department showed up with canines to help with the hunt, scouring the brush near the water.

“It’s a handcuffed male wearing a black and white shirt and red shorts,” Houston police Lt. Larry Crowson told reporters at the scene. “If anybody sees that male in the downtown area, please give us a call.”

Azzeh is described as a 6-foot-tall white man, about 200 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo of a star with a skull on his shoulder, a tattoo of a panther on one arm and a tattoo of a clown with a gun on his back.

He’s also suspected in a series of burglaries in the Terra Bella and Autumn Creek neighborhoods, according to police, and now escape charges are pending as well.
