AMRITSAR: As 59 people were killed after being mowed down by Jalandhar-Amritsar EMU just ahead of a railway crossing, the gatemen at the Jaura Phatak were missing from the two gates on Saturday.
A contingent of the Railway Police Force (RPF) was deputed at the two gates even as protesters remained on the railway tracks near the crossing. A RPF officer deployed at the gates said that the two gatemen are posted at the northern and southern gates of the railway crossing, but they didn’t report to work on Saturday.
After the accident on Friday, a group of protesters had allegedly beaten up the two gatemen, holding them partly responsible for the accident by not signaling the train driver to slow down, the officer added. The officer said they did not have any information about the whereabouts of the two gatemen, but suspect that they might be in some hospital.

He added that the protesters had even damaged the infrastructure at the railway crossing. 40 of those killed identified, 36 bodies cremated Forty of the 59 people killed in the train accident near here have been identified so far and 36 were cremated, including young children from 3 to 11 years of age.
The bodies were consigned to flames at Shiv Puri crematorium. Remains of four have been sent to their respective villages in UP.
