One of the men, aged 40, was taken to hospital in a serious condition and has since died as a result of his injuries.

He was named locally as Amriz Iqbal.

He is believed to have had three children – a 16-year-old, a two-year-old and an 18-month-old.

The second man remains in hospital.

Detectives in the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are continuing enquiries and are investigating the incident as murder.

Officers were called at 1.10pm to reports of a collision in which two pedestrians were injured.

The occupants of the vehicle then got out of the car and assaulted the two men, before making off from the scene.

A concerned local resident said: “For something like this to happen in broad daylight it scares the life out of us. Concerns are massive in the area.

“Our worry is retaliatory attacks. We don’t want to let our kids play in the street.

“It may have been a targeted attack but it was absolute madness. You think ‘what if I had been caught up in the middle of it?’ Would you be brave enough to step in or would you look after your kid with you?

“They need to be put away for a long time. It was butchery in broad daylight.”

Any local resident said: “Everybody is traumatised. He has two small kids. It’s very sad.

“What is the world coming to?”

Police are appealing for witnesses following the incident.

Anyone with information or anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police on 101, quoting crime reference 13180493828.
