Jail for Belfast shop robbery man Eamon McCann who ‘went off the rails’

A man who kept out of trouble for nearly a decade before robbing a shop while “clearly intoxicated” has been jailed.

Eamon McCann (30) was sentenced to a total of four years and eight months yesterday.

Judge Patricia Smyth told McCann that he “catastrophically went off the rails again”, leading a drink and drug-fuelled life.

She added that McCann, said to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, had in the preceding years “achieved a great deal”.

However, last September, McCann, from the Falls Road in Belfast, carried out an “unsophisticated” £160 robbery of a shop in Ardoyne in north Belfast during which he knew he would be recognised.

Judge Smyth said while the drunken robbery may have been unsophisticated, it still must have been a terrifying experience for the shop assistant.

McCann, who pleaded guilty to the robbery charge, will serve half of his sentence in custody, followed by a similar period under supervised parole.
