COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Colorado Springs Police have arrested a man wanted on several felonies after a police pursuit and crime spree across the city Thursday. 11 News has learned it’s not the suspect’s first time leading officers on a trail of violent crimes this year. David Adkins, 30, was also arrested after a home invasion and car jacking that led to him allegedly crashing into an aiport fence back in April.
11 News dug into Adkins record and discovered a pattern of breaking the law, ending up behind bars, and then doing it all over again. The latest on Thursday started when officers tried to arrest Adkins near Powers and Palmer Park. CSPD says he sped off, hitting two cop cars and the side of a car wash while trying to escape.
Witnesses spotted the man driving erratically, slamming into random cars.
“I was just afraid for the people because they were hit pretty hard at a fast rate of speed,” Witness Mark Mann said.
CSPD says the suspect stole a car after crashing his own, and eventually ended up running on foot into a neighborhood. Police say a K9 unit helped take him into custody Thursday.
Adkins was wanted on active felony warrants tied to an April 13 aggravated robbery, August 29 felony theft, and August 31 burglary. CSPD’s robbery unit says Adkins also faces additional charges including for multiple robberies in September 2018 at the Ambassador Adult Theatre, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Moneytree, and a Circle K.
The April 13 aggravated robbery started early that morning with a suspected home invation in the 1200 block of N. Weber Street. Police tell 11 News the suspect took off with a homeowner’s car after firing a shot. About 30 minutes later, the same suspect was involved in a hit-and-run crash. Officers say the driver crashed into the airport fence, took off running, and fired at least one more shot.
A Colorado Springs police officer was indicted after the April pursuit involving Adkins. An El Paso County Grand Jury voted unanimously to indict Gerald Bellow Jr. on one count of attempted first-degree assault and one count of reckless endangerment. According to court documents, Bellow “unlawfully” used his firearm to try and cause serious bodily harm to David Adkins. Bellow has a court date coming up in November.
