BURTON, S.C. – UPDATE: The Beaufort County Coroner confirms the driver of the fatal accident on Bruce K Smalls is 17-year-old Kevin Morazan, a student at Whale Branch High School.

South Carolina Highway Patrol officer Matt Southern says Morazan was driving with three other students north on Bruce K Smalls when he ran off the road, struck a mailbox and overcorrected causing the vehicle to overturn several times.

Officials say Morazan and the front passenger were not wearing seatbelts. They were both ejected from the car. Morazan died on scene, the other passenger was flown to MUSC with serious injuries.

Two passengers in the back of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts.

The Beaufort County School Districts said Morazon was a very popular sophomore. He was in JROTC and on the soccer team, but most knew him as the Warrior Mascot at the football games.

The Burton Fire District responded to a fatal single vehicle accident on Bruce K Smalls Road on Tuesday evening. The driver was killed and the front seat passenger had critical injuries. A third passenger suffered minor injuries.

Initial reports show the SUV rolled over and the two male passengers were ejected from the vehicle.

Firefighters and Beaufort County EMS personnel provided immediate emergency medical care to the driver and passenger; however, the driver died on scene. The passenger was transported to the hospital with what appeared to be critical injuries.

Two male occupants, who had been in the vehicle and were wearing seatbelts, had initially left the scene and then returned. One was transported to the hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries.

Burton fire officials stress the importance of using seatbelts to save lives.
